Ember sat on the edge of the platform in the middle of the prison, watching Rxa sleep. He was at the far end of his chain, as close as he could get to her without touching her. His arm was stretched out, reaching for her.
It hadnât been out of starvation, but just out of a desire to be near her. He had sent her out of his reach so he didnât hurt her in a fit of madness. More than anything, she had wanted to hold him while they slept. She had gotten used to having the warmth of his body next to hers and the smell of sandalwood and spices that seemed to follow him around. It felt wrong to be apart from him, even if by a few feet.
But he had insisted, and he was right. As his hunger grew, he would become more and more of a mindless creature until he couldnât control himself. His features were creased in pain, even while he was sleeping. The cuts in his chest and his stomach werenât healing. He needed to feedâ¦and soon.
This suffering wasnât right. This torture wasnât right. Imprison him, fineâshe understood that. He was trying to kill the world. But using it as an excuse to brutalize him in such a way was wrong. It had to stop.
And there was nobody who could put a stop to itâ¦except her.
She just needed to figure out how.
She crept closer to him, examining the metal collar around his neck. It hinged in the back. She couldnât see any way to break the hinge. The front of it was held shut with a small metal loop that connected the clasp of the collar to the long length of chain. She could see the split where it had been bent into position.
That one small link was the weak point. But how could she get it open?
She couldnât bend it herself. She wasnât strong enough. And with Rxa in his weakened state, neither could he. But maybe if she had some kind of leverâsomething she could stick in there and bend, it might pry open.
But whatever she used had to be stronger than the metal loop, and she assumed it wasâ¦magically reinforced, or some such silliness. She didnât have anything that would work. With a sigh, she stroked her hand over Rxaâs hair. As she touched him, a few of the lines on his face smoothed.
Tears stung her eyes. She wanted him to give up on his war so they could go live out her lifetime in peace. But she understood just a little bit of the cruelty he wanted to defeat. She was witnessing it, after all.
The lights in the room flickered, and she went stiff. As the bulbs calmed, she turned her head to see the dark specter of Aon standing near her, a plate of food in his hand. He set it down on the floor at his feet. âEat.â
With another sigh, she walked to the food and sat down, picking up the plate, and began picking at the food.
